Welcome to Winterpeg University

Situated on Treaty 1 territory, the ancestral and ongoing homeland of the Anishinaabe, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene peoples and the heartland of the Red River Métis, Winterpeg University is nestled in Winnipeg, Manitoba, alongside the Assiniboine River and steps from the Forks National Historic Site, a UNESCO-recognized meeting place of millennia of Indigenous trade and cultural exchange. Founded in 1973 through a grassroots coalition of northern communities, Indigenous leaders, and urban innovators, the university was established to address the stark challenges of climate resilience, social equity, and sustainable urban-rural partnerships in one of Canada’s coldest and most culturally diverse cities.
